Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers DV Sadananda Gowda on Monday said that 50 vials each of Amphotericin-B drugs have been dispatched to Assam and Tripura to fight against black fungus (Mucormycosis).

The 100 vials of the drugs sent to these two Northeastern states are amongst 30100 vials of Amphotericin-B allocated to all the States and UTs and Central Institutions on Monday.

The Ministry, last week, allocated additional 29,250 vials of Amphotericin- B drug, used in treatment of mucormycosis to all the States and UTs reporting such cases.

The statistics, provided by the Chemicals and Fertilizers, says that no black fungus case has been reported in Assam.

This comes days after a 27-year-old youth from Nagaon district has reportedly died due to black fungus in Guwahati. The allocation of drugs has been made based on the number of patients under treatment which is 11,717 across the country.

Government statistics said that the maximum number of mucormycosis cases has been detected in Gujarat (2859) followed by Maharashtra (2770), Andhra Pradesh (768), Madhya Pradesh (752).

The Union Health Ministry has taken a serious note of mucormycosis which has posed a serious challenge for the country’s healthcare system. In fact, the government has already asked the state governments to notify mucormycosis.

In a letter addressed to all State and UTs, Union Health secretary Rajesh Bhushan directed all states and union territories to declare mucormycosis an epidemic. He said that the infection is leading to prolonged morbidity and mortality amongst Covid-19 patients.
