ITANAGAR, 1 Jun: Mountaineer Sorang Tagit Abraham from Arunachal has scaled the world’s tallest peak, Mt Everest.

Abraham hails from Pip Sorang circle in Tali assembly constituency of Kra Daadi district. He has become the second Arunachalee after Tashi Yangjom to climb the Everest this season.

Abraham reached the summit on 31 May, at around 2 pm, and descended to Camp 2 on the same day.

Trained at Dirang-based National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS), Sorang is the 12th Everester from Arunachal, informed NIMAS Director Col Sarfraz Singh.

He is also the youngest mountaineer from the state to climb the peak.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu tweeted and congratulated Abraham for scaling the Everest. According to family sources, Abraham is on his way back to the base camp.

Governor BD Mishra has also congratulated Abraham, and said that “this accomplishment is an inspiring moment for the youths of the state and a proud occasion for every Arunachalee.”

The governor termed it a “welcome achievement to cheer at the time when the whole state is fighting against the Covid-19 pandemic.”

He expressed hope that Abraham, “as a youth icon, will render his service in the fight against the coronavirus and encourage people to go for vaccination and keep on following Covid prescribed protocols.” (With input from Raj Bhavan)
