Assam News – Arrested BDF leader Pradip Dutta Roy rushed to SMCH after complaining chest pain, admission denied

Chief convenor of the Barak Democratic Front (BDF) – Pradip Dutta Roy, who was arrested by the police in Assam’s Cachar district on Saturday, was rushed to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) after he complained of chest pain in the wee hours of Sunday. 

Roy, at around 2:30 am on Sunday complained of chest pain, following which he was rushed to the SMCH in Silchar, Assam for medical attention. 

The doctors at the SMCH provided Pradip Dutta Roy necessary treatment. However, he was denied admission in the hospital. 

Family of Roy claimed that the SMCH doctors denied him admission in the hospital despite complaining severe chest pain and having a swollen foot.

According to Pradip Dutta Roy’s daughter and wife, he had recently undergone liver transplant operation. 

The family said that despite informing the administration of the Silchar jail, about Roy’s medical condition, it overturned family request of serving him with food from home. 

Earlier on Saturday, Cachar Police had arrested Barak Democratic Front’s chief convenor Pradip Dutta Roy after 8 hours of interrogation for issuing ultimatum of 48 hours to replace an Assamese hoarding with a Bengali one. 

Pradip Dutta Roy, who is also the founding president of All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA), on the basis of a case registered at Silchar Sadar police station.

The case was lodged by the Hindu Yuva Parishad.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also in charge of the home department, reportedly ordered the police to arrest Dutta Roy. 

Sarma said, “Pradip Dutta Roy is anti-Bengali,” adding, “Bengali Hindus have already become minority in the Barak Valley”” 

The Cachar Police has levelled charges against Dutta Roy under sections 153(A)/295/295(A)/124/506/505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) “for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of place and language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony”.
