One of the oldest Durga Pujas of upper Assam, Bokel Durga Puja will turn 183 years this time.
Last year, due to Covid19 pandemic, the Durga Puja celebration was not possible with idols at Bokel.
The puja committee celebrated Durga Puja without idol at Bokel in Dibrugarh district.
But this time, the puja will be celebrated following all rituals.
“Since the Ahom days, Durga Puja has been celebrated at Bokel. Human sacrifice was also done during puja in the Ahom days. Devotees and tourists from all over Assam came to Bokel during Durga Puja to take blessings of Maa Durga,” said Dinesh Das, secretary of Bokel Durga Puja Committee.
He said, “Artisans from Kolkata came here to make the idols. Our idols have unique features. The same artisan family has been making idols for us for the last many years. We organised puja with all rituals and animal sacrifice was done during puja.”
“Bokel Durga Puja has a historical significance because it was started during the Ahom period and many people from all walks of life join us during the puja,” Das said.
Meanwhile, the government has issued an advisory for Durga Puja celebration.
Due to Covid19, the government has issued guidelines for the smooth conduct of Durga Puja.
“We are following all Covid19 protocols issued by the government. The use of masks and sanitizers is a must for those people who will come to the puja pandal. This year, our idols have been made by local artisans.”
“We are happy that this time, we are organising the puja with idols. Last time, we could not perform ghat puja,” Das added.
