Assam News – Former Nagaland CM SC Jamir honoured with Padma Bhushan

Former Nagaland chief minister SC Jamir has been honoured with Padma Bhushan award in New Delhi on Monday. 

President Ram Nath Kovind gave away the Padma Bhushan award to SC Jamir during a function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi. 

“President Kovind presents Padma Bhushan to Dr SC Jamir for Public Affairs. A veteran political leader and Governor of many states, Dr Jamir is one of the founders of the state of Nagaland,” an official tweet read.

Meanwhile, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio has congratulated SC Jamir for being honoured with Padma Bhushan. 

“Congratulations, Dr. S.C Jamir on being awarded with the #PadmaBhushan, the third-highest Civilian Award, for exceptional and distinguished service in the field of Public Affairs. I wish you the very best in all your endeavours,” tweeted Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio.

SC Jamir happens to be the first politician from Nagaland to receive the Padma Bhushan award. 

He is the second personality from Nagaland after Rani Gaidinliu (1982) to receive Padma Bhushan. 

Born on October 17, 1931 – SC Jamir had served as chief minister of Nagaland, Governor of Odisha, Governor of Maharashtra, Governor of Gujarat and Governor of Goa. 

He did his early education in Mokokchung. From Kolkata’s Scottish Church College he did his intermediate in arts. 

Later, he went to the Allahabad University for higher studies from where he subsequently obtained his BA and LLB degrees.

Jamir was a member of the negotiation body that held talks with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1960 leading to the establishment of Nagaland as a state within India. 

He was one of the signatories of the 16th Point Agreement which brought about the creation of Nagaland state and is today considered as one of the architects of modern Nagaland. 

He served as Chief Minister of Nagaland five times (1980, 1982–1986, 1989–90 and 1993–2003).
