Assam News – KVK Darrang gets its permanent address after 15 years

After a long gap of nearly 15 years of service from a rented campus, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Darrang finally got its permanent address.

Newly-appointed deputy commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarma on Thursday ceremonially started the functioning of the institution in its new permanent campus surrounding an area of 17 bighas of land along with an Assamtype office.

In this connection, a public function was attended by several senior officials of the Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Jorhat including its director extension education (DEE) and Dr PK Pathak, associate director, extension education (veterinary).

The function was also attended by Dr A Borgohain, joint registrar (ACAD), Dr BK Sarma, Dr PC Deka, head of horticulture research station (HRS ), Kahikuchi and head of KVK, Kamrup, Dr D K Kalita among others.

In his inaugural speech, deputy commissioner Sarma appealed to the AAU officials to properly protect the area from further encroachment.

He hoped that with the intervention of new farm technology developed in the centre, the growing demand for agricultural production along with the growing population could well be fulfilled in the agriculture-dependent district.

Speaking on the occasion, DEE, AAU,  Dr Pathak said the functioning of the KVK in its new permanent set-up will help the local farmers to avail the benefits of farm technology in a much better way.

Meanwhile, talking to Northeast Now, Dr Pathak said, “Our efforts for sanctioning fund to construct the permanent infrastructure of the centre are on and fresh proposal of more than Rs 2.5 crore has already been submitted to the ICAR for its early approval. Hope, we will get the fund within a short time.”

Earlier, Dr Abdul Hafiz, Head of KVK, Darrang in his welcome speech promised to develop the KVK to a model KVK in the state.

The plot of land was allotted way back in 2006, however, due to encroachment of a part of it and opposed by a section of local people, the KVK authority could take possession of the land only a few months back with the removal of encroachment.

Till date, it was functioning from a temporary rented office.

Pankaj Deka, additional deputy commissioner (revenue) and Pranjal Bora, deputy superintendent of police (headquarters) also attended it.
