At 3,230, Punjab sees highest 1-day farm fires, over 17,000 this season | Chandigarh News Update with guwahati assam

As paddy harvesting season nears its end, the number of fire incidents has surged to 3,230 in a single day on Sunday. This is a significant increase from the 1,360 fires reported on Saturday. In comparison, last year on November 5, the state reported 2,817 farm fires.

Satellite remote sensing detected 4,160 residue-burning events in the six study states on Sunday. The state-wise distribution of events detected on Sunday was 3,230 in Punjab, 109 in Haryana, 64 in Uttar Pradesh, 59 in Rajasthan, and 698 in Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi didn’t report any farm fire. In total, 26,727 burning events were detected in these six states between September 15, 2023, and November 5, 2023. The distribution of these events in Punjab, Haryana, UP, Delhi, Rajasthan, and MP was 17,403, 1,514, 1,183, 2, 1,062, and 5,563, respectively.

The Punjab Remote Sensing Centre (PRSC), Ludhiana, under the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), played a crucial role in monitoring these fire events.

On Sunday, Sangrur reported the highest number of fires at 551, followed by 299 in Firozpur and 298 in Mansa district, respectively. Additionally, Bathinda recorded 247 fires, Barnala recorded 189, Ludhiana recorded 184, Moga recorded 179, Tarn Taran reported 177, Patiala recorded 169, Faridkot recorded 163, Jalandhar recorded 155, Muktsar recorded 133, and Kapurthala recorded 119 fire events. In the remaining districts, the number of fires was less than 100.

A cumulative overview of fire events in Punjab from September 15 to November 5 shows that Sangrur had the highest number of fires recorded, reaching 2,698. Ferozpur recorded 1,850 fires, followed by 1,762 in Tarn Taran, 1,432 in Amritsar, 1,289 in Patiala, 1,256 in Mansa, 876 in Bathinda, 818 in Ludhiana, 707 each in Kapurthala and Fatehgarh Sahib, 673 in Faridkot, 671 in Moga, 666 in Jalandhar, and 577 in Barnala. Pathankot recorded the lowest number of fires, with only three recorded to date.

On Sunday, Bathinda’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 375, categorized as “very poor,” while Mandi Gobindgarh’s AQI was 291 (poor). Jalandhar was in the “poor” category with an AQI of 261, Khanna recorded an AQI of 255, Patiala’s AQI was 248, and Ludhiana’s AQI stood at 243. Amritsar’s AQI was in the “moderate” category, with an AQI of 178.
