ABSCONDING DIAMOND trader Mehul Choksi’s wife has approached a court, seeking cancellation of a bailable warrant issued against her in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
The warrant against Priti Kothari in August was issued by the special court, designated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Kothari was named an accused in the second supplementary chargesheet filed by the ED in 2020.
In the plea filed through lawyer Rahul Agarwal, Kothari said that after the court took cognisance of the chargesheet filed by the ED, summons were issued to her to face trial in June 2022. The ED then sought for a bailable warrant against Kothari, stating that she had not appeared before the court despite being served the summons.

According to Kothari’s plea, she was not aware of the legal proceedings as she has been a resident of Antigua and Barbuda since 2018 — prior to the complaint filed by the ED. The plea further states that she reported to the local Antiguan police in 2021 that her husband — Mehul Choksi — had gone missing, and the issue was also heard by the High Court, with CBI being a party in the proceedings.
Kothari said that the ED issued the summons to her in Mumbai, even though the agency was of the knowledge that she does not reside there, and hence, it cannot be considered that she had not complied with the same.
The court on Tuesday asked the ED to file a reply to the cancellation plea sought by Kothari.
