Assam’s Elvis Ali Hazarika became the first Assamese to swim from Dharamtar Jetty to the Gateway of India.

It has been reported that the ace swimmer from Assam started swimming in the Arabian sea at 1 am on Tuesday and culminated at 11 am.

Elvis, who is planning to cross the North Channel to be attempted the next year, completed the target of swimming in the 38-km long route within 10 hours.

The Assam Olympic Association has congratulated the Assam swimmer for his success.

Sharing a picture on its Facebook page, the Assam Olympic Association wrote: “Elvis Ali Hazarika becomes the first Assamese to successfully swim from Dharamtar Jetty to the Gateway Of India, Mumbai, Arabian Sea.
Congratulations! We are proud of you!”

Assam sport & youth affairs minister Bimal Borah has also congratulated Elvis Ali Hazarika.

“Heartiest congratulations to eminent swimmer Shri Elvis Ali Hazarika for becoming the 1st Assamese to successfully swim from Dharamtar Jetty to the Gateway of India in an ardous swim taking 10 hours to complete,” Borah tweeted.

“Assam immensely proud of you and your achievement. Keep shining,” he added.

Elvis represented India in the Asia Pacific Swimming Championship in 1991 at the age of 9,

The Assam swimmer also represented India in the South Asian Federation Games in 1995 and 1999.

In 2009, he represented the country in the World Police Games.

Elvis also represented India in the All-India-Pacific National Aquatic Games, Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior Aquatic National Championship and the National Games.

In 2018, swimmer Elvis became the first Assamese to swim 29 km in the 33 km long English Channel.

In 2019, Elvis Ali Hazarika became the first Assamese person to successfully cross the Catalina Channel.

To achieve the feat, Hazarika started his journey from the United States and swum across the Catalina Channel to reach Mexico.
