Gauhati University has decided to postpone the First Semester Postgraduate (PG) Theory Examination, scheduled to be held from April 19, 2021 after a protest by the students under the university.

In view of the rising positive cases in Assam, particularly in Guwahati, the students under Gauhati University vehemently opposed the commencement of the examination.

In a fresh notification, the Controller of Examinations of Gauhati University, after discussion with the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU), the university authority decided to postpone the examination scheduled to be held from April 19, 2021.

The examination has been rescheduled to be started from April 30, 2021, the notification said. “The new schedule will be published soon,” the notification said.

Copy of the notice has been sent to all the heads of departments of Gauhati University and all the principals of PG colleges.

In an earlier notification issued on April 18, 2021, the Controller of Examinations of Gauhati University said the “scheduled P.G. 1st semester examination will be conducted as per time schedule notified earlier”.

“However, candidates, who are not able to appear in the examination, have to inform the Controller of Examinations, Gauhati University through the concerned Principal/HoD for further course of action. A second phase of examination may be conducted for these students at a convenient time,” the April 18 notice said.

After the issuance of the notice, the students of the university staged protests against the university authority’s decision to hold the examination as per schedule.

The students’ body of several colleges under the Gauhati University in Assam had written to the controller of examinations to either postpone or hold the examinations for graduation and post-graduation students as their studies have been hit by the COVID19 pandemic last year and are facing trouble again with the resurgence of the disease.

The Arya Vidyapeeth College Students’ Union demanded ‘dual mode of examination’ for all the semesters of graduation students and postponement of the PG examinations.

The students of Barpeta’s Madhab Choudhury College under Gauhati University urged the Gauhati University Controller of Examinations to hold the examinations online.

The Mangaldai College Students’ Union also wrote to the Controller of Examinations of Gauhati University seeking ‘dual mode of examination’ in view of the rising cases of Covid19 across Assam.

The Covid19 situation in Assam deteriorated further on Monday.

Assam on Monday reported a massive spike in the number Covid19 positive cases.

A total of 1,367 Covid19 positive cases were detected in Assam in the last 24 hours.

According to the update, out of the total 1,367 fresh positive Covid19 cases detected in Assam, 482 cases were reported from in and around Guwahati city in Kamrup Metro district.

The Covid19 positivity rate in Assam on Monday was recorded at 2.09%.
