GUWAHATI, April 13: In the wake of a number of students of private schools in Guwahati testing positive for COVID-19 in the span of two days, the State government is contemplating shutting down of schools post Bihu holidays, especially the lower and upper primary classes, before the situation worsens further.

The schools where students have tested positive include Sanskriti-The Gurukul, Don Bosco, Happy Child School and Sarala Birla Gyanjyoti, Amingaon. More than 20 students have tested positive in these four schools in the last 48 hours.

“Top officials of the Education department today apprised Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma about the gravity of the scenario and a decision is likely to be taken immediately after Bihu in the interest of the safety of the children, especially those studying in the primary classes. The final call will be taken by the Minister,” a source told The Assam Tribune.

However, he said that the shutting down of schools is being mulled to ensure the situation does not go out of hands and rate of infections could be checked.

“We do not want to press the panic button since things are under control. As and when the Government decides to discontinue the classes, a SOP would be issued vis-à-vis online classes and other relevant issues,” the source asserted. Most schools have now declared holidays due to Bihu from today, which has given us some breathing space. But the decision has to be taken soon,” the source opined.

While some schools are schooled to open on Friday, many others have declared Bihu holidays till April 20.

Many private hospitals express inability to provide vaccination: Meanwhile, a sense of panic has gripped people after many private hospitals in Guwahati expressed their inability to provide them their scheduled second dose of vaccination citing unavailability of the vaccine at their disposal.

Private hospitals attribute the present scenario to lack of supply of vaccines from the government.

“Almost all the private hospitals have run out of stock and there is still no word as to when the supply will resume,” a senior administrative official of a leading Guwahati-based private hospital told this correspondent.
