In a first, SC Collegium recommends ST woman judicial officer from Mizoram as Gauhati High Court judge 1

In a bid to fill a large number of vacancies in High Courts across the country, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended 68 names, including 10 women, for elevation to the courts.

This is the first time the SC Collegium has cleared such a large number of names in one go.

The three-member Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India N V Ramana, which met on August 25 and September 1, picked the names from a list of 112 probables, Indian Express reported.

Sixty-eight of 112 names have been recommended for appointments to 12 High Courts. Of the 68, there are 44 from the Bar and 24 from the Judicial Service.

Scripting history in gender representation in the judiciary yet again, the Collegium recommended a woman judicial officer belonging to the Scheduled Tribes, Marli Vankung, as judge of the Gauhati High Court, The Hindu reported.

If the government approves the recommendation, she would be the first ever High Court judge from the State of Mizoram.

The 12 High Courts for which the names have been recommended are Allahabad, Rajasthan, Calcutta, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Madras, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Punjab and Haryana, Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Guwahati.
