India added a shooting gold, a wushu silver and an equestrian bronze medal to the tally after an eventful fifth day at the Asian Games 2023 on Thursday. Naorem Roshibina Devi won the women’s 60kg silver in wushu, India’s first medal of the day, bettering her bronze finish at the 2018 Asian Games, reports olympics.com.
Shooters Sarabjot Singh, Arjun Singh Cheema and Shiva Narwal clinched the men’s 10m air pistol team gold. India have bagged 13 shooting medals – four gold, four silver and five bronze – at Hangzhou.
The Indian men’s hockey team beat reigning champions Japan and took the top spot in Pool A. The men’s football team, however, were ousted by Saudi Arabia in the round of 16.
Tennis pair Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni won their men’s doubles bronze medal match. They will defend India’s crown in the gold medal match. Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale, too, are assured a mixed doubles medal.
Boxers Nishant Dev and Jaismine Lamboria won their pre-quarterfinal bouts and are one win away from an assured medal, each, at Hangzhou.
Indian paddler Sharath Kamal won 11-9, 11-2, 11-7, 11-7 against Maldives’ Mohamed Shaffan Ismail in the men’s singles round of 32 at Hangzhou 2023. The 41-year-old Indian ace won two Asian Games bronze medals in 2018 – men’s team and mixed doubles.
Sharath Kamal will go up against Chinese Taipei’s Chih-Yuan Chuang in the round of 16 tomorrow.
Compatriot Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, too, booked a men’s double round of 16 berth. The 30-year-old Indian paddler beat Saudi Arabia’s Turki Lafi Almutairi in straight games. G Sathiyan will go up against second seed Wang Chuqin of China for a spot in the quarter-final.
India’s Anush Agarwalla bagged his second Asian Games 2023 equestrian medal, a bronze, after ranking third in the dressage intermediate I freestyle event. The 23-year-old rider, mounted on horse Etro, scored 73.030 per cent of the points. It is the first-ever individual dressage medal at the Asian Games.
Vipul Chheda, on the other hand, was eliminated from the dressage individual event. On Tuesday, Indian riders had clinched the equestrian dressage team gold at Hangzhou.
The Indian men’s squash team won 3-0 against Nepal in the Pool A tie at Hangzhou 2023.
Abhay Singh and Mahesh Mangaonkar won their matches in straight games against Amrit Thapa and Arhant Simha, respectively. Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu, meanwhile, followed suit in the final match with an 11-1, 11-2, 11-6 victory.
India won four of the five group matches at the Asian Games 2023, assuring a semi-final spot and a medal. Their only defeat came against Pakistan on Wednesday.
Earlier, the Indian women’s squash team made the semi-final and assured the nation’s first squash medal at Hangzhou.
Indian women’s doubles table tennis pair Sreeja Akula and Diya Chitale won 11-8, 15-13, 11-6 against Vietnam’s Tran Mai Ngoc and Nguyen Thi Nga in the round of 32 match at the Asian Games 2023.
Later, Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee beat Zauresh Akasheva and Anastassiya Lavrona of Kazakhstan in straight games, too, in their women’s doubles round of 32 clash at Hangzhou.
Sreeja Akula / Diya Chitale will go up against fifth seeds Miwa Harimoto / Miyuu Kihara from Japan. Meanwhile, Sutirtha Mukherjee / Ayhika Mukherjee will face Thailand’s Wanwisa Aueawiriyayothin / Jinnipa Sawettabut.
