With the stupendous show of his latest directorial venture, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, at the global box office, it is a good time to be Karan Johar.
The success of the film, which marks Johar’s return to direction after a gap of seven years, comes at a crucial time for Bollywood amid a continuing challenge from OTT and a spectacular run of films from the South.
Known as much for his relationship dramas as for managing one of India’s most prominent production houses, Dharma Productions, Johar, 51, wears many hats: director, writer, producer, talent-show judge and chat-show host.
He will be in conversation with Anant Goenka, Executive Director, Indian Express Group, and Shubhra Gupta, Film Critic, The Indian Express, at the Express Adda on Monday.

Son of producer Yash Johar and Hiroo Johar, Karan Johar burst into the world of popular entertainment with his super-hit Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). In his career spanning two-and-a-half decades, he has directed several big-screen dramas including Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), My Name Is Khan (2010), Student of the Year (2012), and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016).
These movies consolidated his position as a writer-director with a unique take on modern urban life, warts and all.
As the head of Dharma Productions, Johar has, over the years, backed multiple box-office successes, including Wake Up Sid (2009), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014), Kapoor & Sons (2016), Raazi (2018), Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva (2022).
