BSF director general Pankaj Kumar Singh’s recent comment that the “demographic balance” has been upset over a period of time in border states like Assam and Bengal is totally unwarranted. Although his statement comes in the wake of the Centre’s notification enhancing BSF’s jurisdiction from 15km to 50km in Assam, Bengal and Punjab, as the head of a professional paramilitary force Singh should have refrained from making a political comment about the issue. As it is, objections have been raised against BSF’s enhanced jurisdiction in certain states. That debate is to be sorted out among the political leadership.

But if the BSF DG himself wades into the controversy and gives a seemingly political colour to the issue, then it unnecessarily casts doubts on the Centre’s move and questions the paramilitary force’s neutrality. After all, the BSF is the country’s force responsible for guarding its borders. It should only concern itself with operational details. Today, the Centre in its wisdom and security assessment has felt the need to enhance BSF’s area of operation in certain states.

Tomorrow, the same notification could be modified or withdrawn depending on dynamic security challenges. In all circumstances, the BSF should appear neutral and professional while carrying out its orders.

Nor should political parties deliberately drag the BSF into their political debates. Security of India’s borders is serious business. Operational details of the paramilitary force should be discussed within the right government and Parliamentary forums. Let’s remember that politicisation of state armed forces is an extremely slippery slope. A neighbouring country has paid a heavy price for going down that path. We shouldn’t be shooting ourselves in the foot here.
