HUBBARD — If his Week 1 performance is any indication, Hubbard’s T.C. Caffey is in for a special senior season.
The Eagles’ workhorse running back put together a record-breaking performance in Hubbard’s 48-28 win over Norwayne last Friday. During the victory, Caffey ran for a school-record 456 yards and scored five touchdowns, including a school-record 93 yarder.
His yardage total ranks 15th all-time in Ohio high school football, and Hubbard’s 551 rushing yards as a team are 25th.
Impressive as it was, Caffey is quick to credit those around him.
“My linemen were all working together, banding together for the same purpose,” he said, noting that the Eagles had a plan to run the ball effectively.
Hubbard head coach Brian Hoffman added, “We obviously had a gameplan in mind and ways we wanted to go about attacking Norway’s defense. Obviously, (Caffey is) a big part of it, and each week he’s a big part of it. That’s no secret.”
It hasn’t been a secret for a while, either, Hoffman said.
“We knew we had something special a couple years ago,” he noted.
Caffey, who’s up to 2,477 career rushing yards now and ran for 1,179 last year, says he entered this season with two primary goals: help lead the Eagles to state and break the school record for rushing yards in a single-season.
That mark, held by all-time Hubbard great L.J. Scott, is set at 2,819 yards. Scott, then a 4-star recruit, went on to play for Michigan State.
As for the state appearance, the Eagles have a couple more non-conference games to get through the next two weeks, including a Friday night matchup with Cardinal Mooney.
Then, Northeast 8 Conference play begins. The Eagles’ league schedule begins with a huge test in Poland Seminary and is bookended by a big game with South Range, who is fresh off a 41-21 victory over Springfield.
Lofty expectations for Caffey, to be sure, but perhaps the kind that a leader would set for himself.
“He’s definitely a leader by example,” Hoffman said of the tailback. “When he does say something, everyone listens. His dedication — not only to the program but to himself and our team — is second to none.”
Hoffman says in addition to leading on the field, Caffey is a leader in school, too.
“He’s just a great character kid. … He’s the real deal,” the coach said. “He’s a hard worker on the field and in the classroom. I don’t think you’d find a teammate or a teacher that has a negative word to say about him.”
Hoffman added, “He’s just a great kid, and he translates that through the game of football. He’s really built himself into one of the premier players in the area.”
Colleges are beginning to take note. Caffey received an offer from Youngstown State during the offseason, and over the weekend announced he’d received an offer from Charlotte.
The bruiser, who said he enjoys the physicality of football, said he’s looking for a school with a good sports medicine program and a football team that “bands together like this one (at Hubbard).”
Caffey said he isn’t really sure when he wants to make his decision. In the meantime, his coach says programs should keep taking note.
“He’s got a couple D1 offers, and one here is from YSU, which is a great program. If he ends up playing over there, I think that’s a great fit for him,” Hoffman said. “I just have to say to some of the others out there, I don’t know what you’re doing. You’re missing the boat, so wake up.”
The Eagles and Cardinal Mooney kick off this Friday at 7 p.m.
