Agartala: Amid a political crisis brewing in the state, a team of central BJP leaders led by national general secretary BL Santosh arrived in Tripura on Wednesday to hold a two-day organisational meeting with leaders and workers of the party to defuse the tension.

The team of central leaders including national general secretary B L Santosh, organizational secretary for Assam and Tripura, Phanindra Nath Sharma, North East general secretary (organization) Ajay Jamwal began meeting with state party president Manik Saha, MLAs, MPs and district presidents.

The visit of the central leadership comes amid speculation of dissident MLAs planning to quit the party to join Trinamool Congress ahead of the 2023 general assembly elections in the state.

Mukul Roy, former national vice-president of BJP, was responsible for switching Sudip Roy Barman and his loyalists to the saffron party after he quit Trinamool Congress in 2016. However, after his exit from the party, the national leadership is now concerned over losing the ground in Tripura.

The central leaders held meetings with chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, his cabinet colleagues and two MPs from Tripura, Pratima Bhoumik and Rebati Tripura, and other party functionaries individually to take note of their grievances.
