Agartala: Amid a political crisis brewing in the state, a team of central BJP leaders led by national general secretary BL Santosh arrived in Tripura on Wednesday to hold a two-day organisational meeting with leaders and workers of the party to defuse the tension.
The team of central leaders including national general secretary B L Santosh, organizational secretary for Assam and Tripura, Phanindra Nath Sharma, North East general secretary (organization) Ajay Jamwal began meeting with state party president Manik Saha, MLAs, MPs and district presidents.
The visit of the central leadership comes amid speculation of dissident MLAs planning to quit the party to join Trinamool Congress ahead of the 2023 general assembly elections in the state.
Mukul Roy, former national vice-president of BJP, was responsible for switching Sudip Roy Barman and his loyalists to the saffron party after he quit Trinamool Congress in 2016. However, after his exit from the party, the national leadership is now concerned over losing the ground in Tripura.
The central leaders held meetings with chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, his cabinet colleagues and two MPs from Tripura, Pratima Bhoumik and Rebati Tripura, and other party functionaries individually to take note of their grievances.
“The meeting is aimed at strengthening the party organisation and how the party workers can reach the common masses during the COVID situation. These are all routine meetings. Party wants our karykartas to be more active during the pandemic to reach out to the people”, BJP state spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya said.
When questioned about the tension in the party and possibility of re-emergence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Tripura, Bhattacharya said that any party can participate in democratic process in any state. In the past, several regional parties of other states including Trinamool Congress contested the polls, but people rejected them.

“People of Tripura are conscious and aware of the political situation. They have seen regional parties from outside come to Tripura before polls like migratory birds. Moreover, people are watching the post-poll violence unleashed by Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Bengal,” Bhattacharya added
Meanwhile, former health minister and BJP MLA Sudip Roy Barman refuted media reports of him joining Trinamool Congress and said that there might be differences in the party, but they are very much in BJP.
“The MLAs are discussing their issues with the central leaders who are visiting the state on a two-day visit. They shall listen to the grievances and sort out things,” Roy Barman said.
