Shillong, May 7: A total of 108 persons have tested positive for Covid-19 even after taking the vaccination.
“Till May 1, we have 108 cases that were infected or contracted the infection after being vaccinated,” Additional District Health & Medical Officer Dr A Diengdoh said in a news conference today.
“Of this, around 71 of them got infected after the first dose and only 37 of them got infected after the second dose. Only one was hospitalized and that is a staff nurse of Robert Hospital but she was not taken to ICU and was discharged and is stable,” she said.
The Additional DM&HO also informed that one of the persons who succumbed to the disease had received his first dose only on April 23.
“This means it (vaccination) has not really given him the due protection. With one dose we have seen that we don’t get the full coverage that is why the need to get the second dose to get at least 80 percent protection. However, to get 100 percent protection you need to adhere to the protocols by wearing masks, washing hands and watching your distance,” she asserted.
Dr Diengdoh also informed there are two cases who were admitted at the Shillong civil hospital who are 70 years and above, who were vaccinated but were declared positive but are now stable and are being discharged from the hospital.
According to her, there is a need to strengthen the vaccination programme in the district as it will reduce the fatality rate and need for hospital treatment.
So far, 170 persons have succumbed due to the viral infection in East Khasi Hills district.
According to the medical officials, more than 60 percent of the active cases in the state are from East Khasi Hills which is having a positivity rate of 15.
They said that on average the district has 54 percent symptomatic cases every day and about 5 percent cases required oxygen or ICU treatment every day. Of 654 beds in the district, 366 are occupied.
