Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma says 'ready' to roll out red carpet for Mamata Banerjee, why? 1

Assam chief minister and BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma said he is ready to roll out the red carpet for West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool president Mamata Banerjee to Assam.

Chief minister Sarma said this during his interaction with media persons as he visited the Siliguri residence of former Mariani MLA, late Alok Kumar Ghosh on Sunday.

The Assam CM’s comment comes after Trinamool Congress’ recent activities to increase its hold in Assam and Tripura.

Trinamool Congress, which retained power in West Bengal despite massive campaigns by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the State Assembly elections 2021, recently roped in former Silchar MP and All India Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev.

Sushmita Dev, who is the daughter of former Union minister Santosh Mohan Dev, was a prominent leader of the Congress in the Barak Valley.

While welcoming Mamata Banerjee to Assam, chief minister Sarma said Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress would not affect the BJP in the state.

He said, “The more she (Mamata Banerjee) visits Assam and Tripura, the more it will benefit us. I will welcome her by rolling out a red carpet.”

Hitting out at Mamata Banerjee for election-related violence in West Bengal, Sarma said, “Polls in Assam and West Bengal took place at the same time but not a stone was pelted at any house in Assam. In West Bengal, court had to order CBI probe.”

He also said Sushmita Dev’s joining the Trinamool Congress will only affect the vote bank of the Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

During his visit to Alok Kumar Ghosh’s residence in Siliguri, Sarma was accompanied by Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita and minister Ashok Singhal.

“We shall forever be indebted to former Mariani MLA Late Alok Kumar Ghosh for his towering contributions to
@BJP4Assam. His loss is irreparable. Visited his home at Siliguri to pay my condolences to the family. Sri
@TheAshokSinghal & Sri @Bhabesh_KalitaR joined me,” chief minister Sarma tweeted.
