Police commemoration day observed in Mizoram | Guwahati City News

Along with rest of the country, Mizoram on Thursday observed Police Commemoration Day at all district headquarters with top officers paying tribute to 377 police personnel who laid down their lives while performing duties across the country between September 2020 and August 2021. 

Commemoration Day Parade was held in different district capital during which names of martyrs who lost their lives in the line of duty were readout. 

The ceremonial parade held in Aizawl was graced by chief minister Zoramthanga. 

He along with DGP S.B.K. Singh and other officers paid rich tributes to the Mizoram police, who died at the hand of enemies and laid wreaths on a memorial stone, set up as a mark of respect to the martyred personnel, at the headquarters of the first battalion of the Mizoram Armed Police. 

Singh said that at least 6 personnel of Mizoram police died duty to Covid-19 in the line of duty.

Police Commemoration Day is observed every year to honour the sacrifices of 9 policemen who were killed by Chinese forces at Hot Springs, Ladakh, in 1959. 

The Chinese Army personnel opened fire and hurled grenades at the police party of 20 personnel, led by sub-inspector Karam Singh. 9 were killed in the incident, seven were taken prisoners and the remaining managed to escape. 

During the annual conference of Inspectors General of Police of states and union territories in January 1960, it was decided that October 21 would be observed as Police Commemoration Day throughout the country as a mark of respect to all personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty.
