Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed for stopping consumption of beef in areas dominated by Hindu population.

“We believe that cow is our mother. We want non-consumption of beef where cows are worshiped,” said CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in the Assam Assembly.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that his government would take every step allowed by the Constitution of India to protect cows in the State.

The Assam CM said: “The Directive Principles of State Policy of the Constitution says cow slaughter must be stopped.”

Notably, Article 48 of the Constitution of India says: “The State shall endeavour to organise agriculture and animal husbandry on modern and scientific lines and shall, in particular, take steps for preserving and improving the breeds, and prohibiting the slaughter, of cows and calves and other milch and draught cattle.”

“I am not asking anyone to change their food habit but many times I have seen statement from Darul Uloom in Lucknow, asking the Muslim people not to consume beef in Hindu areas,” Himanta Biswa Sarma further said.

“There is no need for a Madina hotel (indicating food joints that serves beef) in Fancy Bazar or in Gandhibasti or Santipur (locations in Guwahati) as there is sensitivity. However, we can appeal to people to give up where there is no sensitivity,” Himanta Biswa Sarma added.

On Saturday, the first day of the Assam Assembly session, Governor Jagdish Mukhi had said that the State Government is planning to introduce a cow protection bill to ban transportation of the bovine to and from outside the State.
